OpenTipitaka App Guide

OpenTipitaka is a multilingual Pali Tipiṭaka digitization project jointly undertaken by Maha Vajiralongkorn Pali Theravada Royal College and Pyin Oo Lwin Pa-Auk Tawya Meditation Centre. Under the guidance of Venerable Kumārābhivaṃsa Sayadaw, the project uses modern technology to connect the Pali scriptures with contemporary multilingual study needs and to build a trustworthy platform for translating, parallel reading, and proofreading the Theravāda Tipiṭaka, Aṭṭhakathā, and Ṭīkā. OpenTipitaka provides a cross-platform reading application for Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, and Linux. It supports paragraph-aligned reading of the Pali original and multilingual translations, full-text search, professional dictionaries, bookmarks, split-screen reading, automatic scrolling, and text-to-speech, while inviting users worldwide to help proofread and improve the translations. The OpenTipitaka application is designed and developed by Venerable Sunanda, with operational support provided by Dhamma Sarana LLC.

Translation languages currently supported include Chinese, English, Vietnamese, Thai, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, French, German, Burmese, Sinhala, Marathi, Khmer, Bengali, and Tibetan. More languages will be added over time.

Most current translations are AI-generated and have not been fully proofread. During AI translation, the vast majority of suttas, most commentaries, and some sub-commentaries were translated with reference to Myanmar word-by-word explanations (Nissaya) and Myanmar translations. Overall, the translations are approaching human translation quality and have high reference value. There is still room to improve accuracy, terminology consistency, and related areas; we will continue improving them and update them periodically.

    Deepseek performed the first Chinese proofreading.

  7. Launch

    Deepseek completed the full Pali Tipitaka Chinese and English translations; the website, PDFs, and Windows reading app were released together.

Quick start

  1. Install from the App Store (iPhone, iPad, Mac) or Google Play (Android). For Windows and Linux, download the installer from the Pa-Auk Tipitaka folder (link in the next card).
  2. On first launch, choose the app interface language.
  3. While online, download translation databases from inside the app.

Except for users who participate in proofreading, who must register with an email address and set a username, this app does not collect any other personal information.

FAQ

Are translations fully proofread?

Not yet. Many translations are AI-generated and still improving. The app invites everyone to help proofread and refine terminology consistency over time.

Can I contribute corrections?

Yes. Register and log in, then double-click a paragraph translation to edit and submit it for review.

FAQ

Does it work offline?

Yes. Content is stored in local SQLite databases. You can import databases and update them when online.

What if database download fails in the app?

Use the SqlLite Database link in the Download section to download a package, then import it into the app. On Android without Google Play, use the Tipitaka folder link for the APK.
